About Cans Legal Information

Charitable aims

Our objective as a charity is to make low-cost legal information available to the general public. Please see the video on our home page for a visual representation of CANS Legal Information.

As part of our charitable aims, we publish a detailed summary of the laws of England, Wales and Scotland. The online service, www.cans.org.uk, and the loose-leaf version, the CANS Digest of Social Legislation, are updated frequently to make sure the public and advisers receive the latest amendments to legislation. The online service will help us to provide even greater access to affordable legal information.

CANS Trust - charity registration number 803343.

Our history

CANS Trust was established in 1990 to continue the publication of the CANS Digest of Social Legislation. The Digest, which was formerly published by the National Council for Voluntary Organisations, has been in existence since 1939. It was introduced by Winston Churchill's war-time coalition government to cover the numerous emergency measures that came into force as part of the World War II public service provisions. Since 2008, we have been known as Cans Legal Information.

Keeping citizens informed about the law extended beyond war-time and now, 80 years later, the CANS Digest is an extensive three-volume publication that covers more than 450 areas of the law.

CANS Legal Information has also published single-subject paperback books. Key to this undertaking are our disability law books which deliver a complex and disparate set of laws in an easy to digest format. For further information about our papeback books, please click on CANS Guide to Disability Discrimination and CANS Guide to Disability Law.

To reflect the growing use of the Internet by the public, we have now introduced www.cans.org.uk, an online version of the CANS Digest.

The next step?.......That's the exciting thing about the law; it's always changing.
